DAY #26: Taking Issue with Venus

It seems that lots of people have issues with Venus as Holst portrays her - Bringer of Peace. It has been interesting to see the many poems that have come in, making it clear that lots of people have a serious bone to pick with the goddess on the half shell.

Happy to share this one from the very talented Hypatia Pickens

Let Her Be the Evening Star
by Hypatia Pickens

Holst.
You have capitulated
To romantic error.
Venus is no “Bringer of Peace.”
Can you say that to weak Paris,
To Helen who watched, tearful, on the wall?
Born on the waves, they said,
Like all shallow love,
She's a suffocating sea,
A lying succubus,
Methane for breath, brimstone for hair.
Let her be the Evening Star,
Distant and fair,
Transported by celestial music,
But indifferent to your prayer.

  1. An excellent rejoinder to remedy early 20th Century male perceptions. Nicely done, Hypatia.
